What Types Of Information, Instruction, Or Training Are Required?

Supervisors and workers should be able to recognize asbestos-containing substances (ACMs), as well as what to do if they are contacted, to protect their health and that of others.

There are three levels to information, instruction, and training. These pertain to:

  • Asbestos awareness
  • Asbestos work

Asbestos Can Be Licensed

The mere completion of a training program will not make an individual competition. Competence can only be developed by using the skills you have learned through training, on-the-job learning, and assessment.

Each worker and supervisor must receive the appropriate level of instruction, training, and information. An analysis of training needs (TNA), which will allow workers to determine the most relevant topics, will assist in determining what topics need to be covered so that they are not putting others at risk.

Asbestos Awareness

To help workers and supervisors avoid work that could disturb asbestos fabric or any other item that might contain it, this information, instruction, training, and training is provided. It won’t prepare workers, contractors, or others to handle asbestos-containing work. Work that will disturb CMs will require additional instruction, training, and guidance.

  • General maintenance workers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Joiners
  • Decorators and painters
  • Plasterers
  • Construction workers
  • Roofers
  • Shopfitters
  • Gas fitters
  • Heating and ventilation engineers
  • Demolition workers
  • Telecommunication engineers
  • Fire/burglar alarm installers
  • Installers of computers and data
  • Architects
  • Building surveyors

How Do Conduct Adequate Assessments About The Potential For Asbestos Exposure?

Safe work practices and controls, including explanations about the proper use of protective equipment and work methods

  • Proper selection and use of protective equipment
  • Methods of handling waste
  • Emergencies
  • Relevant legal requirements

There are situations where non-licensed work can be permissible (e.g NNLW).

This is not a complete list. It should be tailored to each job so that information, instruction, and training are appropriate.

Employers need to ensure that workers who do not have a license can see:

  • A copy of that work’s risk assessment
  • A copy of your plan of work
  • If applicable, information and results from any air monitor, including similar work, where available
  • Also, workers should receive the following request information:
  • For control measures, maintain records
  • Your personal information, including health records, will be provided to you
  • Results of any face test (FFT), for RPE that is used in the manufacture of asbestos products.
  • A copy of the training records of the individual

Licensable Work In Asbestos

Work with higher-risk asbestos-containing material must only be performed by licensed contractors. Only competent workers and managers are allowed to work with asbestos-containing materials.

Workers who are allowed to use asbestos in licensable jobs should also be informed by employers:

  • A copy of that work’s risk assessment
  • A copy of your plan of work
  • Details regarding any air monitoring or results
  • Particular notifications of work sent to the enforcing agency
  • General information
  • For control measures, maintain records
  • Personal information about the individual from medical records
  • Results of any face-fit for RPE required for work with asbestos
  • Get a duplicate of the license
  • Anonymized aggregate information from health records

Instruction and training on asbestos awareness are only intended to help workers avoid doing any work that might disturb asbestos. An entire refresher course on asbestos awareness is not required by law. It is recommended that some type of refresher training be provided, as required, to maintain awareness about asbestos.

E-learning, other health, and safety updates, or learning could be used to refresh awareness. Employers, managers, and supervisors who have completed awareness courses could present updates or safety talks to employees at home.

All that is required is a pragmatic, common-sense approach to learning and skill refreshment, based on individual capabilities and training needs.

Employers who have had training in non-licensable and licensable jobs are free to complete the lower level refresher training.
